The Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes the volcanic region surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater, which features the active Ol'doinyo Lenkai volcano and the renowned Oldupai Gorge. Covering an area of 8,600 square kilometers, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken caldera on Earth and is considered one of the planet’s natural wonders. It is home to the world’s highest permanent concentration of wildlife and serves as one of the best locations on the continent to view the endangered black rhino. Shifting Sand: This remarkable black dune, made of volcanic ash from Ol'doinyo Lenkai, slowly moves westward across the plains, shifting about 100 meters every six years. Lake Natron Located just outside the conservation area to the northeast, Lake Natron is East Africa’s largest flamingo breeding ground. Its alkaline waters are the primary food source for the flamingos.
