The park is situated in a shallow basin at the foot of the eastern branch of the Rift Valley, surrounded by the red and brown cliffs of the escarpment to the west. It is primarily characterized by the lake and the refreshing, verdant beauty of its mature groundwater forest. Primate species such as baboons, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys are some of the most prominent mammals in the area. Other animals found here include elephants, buffaloes, impalas, wildebeests, hippos, giraffes, and zebras. Lions are also spotted occasionally, sometimes lounging on the branches of acacia trees.
